I was born about 100 years too late for my dream job as an explorer but then I discovered science and realised it was basically the same thing. From the ripe old age of 6 I became driven by a desire to explore the world through the lens of science. I don’t find it surprising that a lot of people think scientist are weird because I grew up in a small town where few people went to University and science was a dirty word, especially for a girl. It was probably this start in life that set me on my mission to make science real and relevant to as many people as possible. While studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I worked in a mortuary assisting with autopsies and setting up a museum of body parts for the public to visit. It was hugely popular and gave me my first insight into the power of science as a tool for inspiring people to be curious about life and the world. Since then I have helped set up a malaria and cancer research network, founded WATS.ON, that helps scientific societies to launch, grow and have broad social impact and most recently, The Curiosity Box, the UK's first STEM subscription box for families and STEM Day in a Box for schools. Touch rugby keeps me sane and chocolate is my drug of choice.
